Part 3 of our free 4-part webinar series for dog trainers
You’ve got the passion. You’ve got the skills. But if you’re feeling stuck — struggling to grow, fill your calendar, or scale your business — you might be stepping in one of the big, avoidable business mistakes that dog trainers often make. In this webinar, we break down 11 of the most common (and most damaging) mistakes we see dog trainers make, and offer practical advice on how to sidestep each one.

Recording Notes & Summary
1. DIY Everything
Trying to do everything yourself — from admin to websites to bookkeeping — is a fast track to burnout. You don’t need to be the expert in everything. Outsourcing (when you’re ready) or even using better systems can free you up to do more of what only you can do.
2. Building the Wrong Business
It’s easy to accidentally build a business that doesn’t align with your goals or lifestyle. Whether that’s working evenings and weekends (when you’d rather not), or feeling pressure to say yes to every client — stop and ask: is this the business I actually want?
3. Overcommitting
Many trainers overschedule themselves, undercharge, or try to offer too many services at once. That leads to stress, dropped balls, and lower quality service. Focus and boundaries are critical.
4. No Clear Client Path
When a client finishes your intro program… what happens next? If the answer is “nothing,” you’re missing out on both revenue and a chance to help. Have a plan and a path for how clients can keep working with you.
5. Underpricing Your Services
Charging too little can actually hurt your credibility — and your sustainability. Know your worth, understand your numbers, and don’t be afraid to raise your rates if needed.
6. Lack of Systems
Flying by the seat of your pants works… until it doesn’t. Systems (for onboarding, follow-up, scheduling, finances, marketing, etc.) reduce mental load and improve the client experience.
7. Ignoring the Backend
You need more than training skills to run a business. That includes contracts, scheduling tools, policies, bookkeeping, and a basic understanding of what makes a business run smoothly. Ignoring the backend leads to chaos.
8. Letting Confidence (or Lack of It) Run the Show
If you’re hesitant to ask for the sale, raise your prices, or even talk about what you do, you’ll struggle to grow. Confidence comes from clarity and repetition — know your pitch, know your offer, and practice.
9. Inconsistent Marketing
Marketing only when you’re slow creates a feast-or-famine cycle. Build a sustainable marketing habit that keeps leads coming in before your schedule has big gaps.
10. Skipping Boundaries
Not setting clear boundaries with clients (or yourself) can lead to resentment, burnout, and frustration. Set expectations, say no when needed, and protect your time.
11. Waiting for the “Perfect” Time
There’s never going to be a perfect time to raise your prices, launch your program, or get help. Stop waiting. Take action — imperfectly — and learn as you go.
